WAS President's Message
Dear colleagues, dear friends,
The XVII World Congress of Sexology will take place in Montrйal, July 10-15, 2005, under the auspices of the World Association for Sexology (WAS) and under the chairmanship of Dr. Pierre Assalian.
As the preparations of this congress are being finalized, we are facing a plethora of sexual health challenges around the world. These challenges demand an interdisciplinary response from those conducting research, providing education, conducting patient care, and advocating for sexual health and rights. The theme of this congress is so important – Unity in Diversity. We must face these challenges working together and united.
During this congress, the World Association for Sexology plans to develop a historic Declaration that will clearly enunciate goals for the achievement of sexual health in the future. We invite you to become a part of this historic moment as we develop specific goals for promoting sexual health in the years ahead.
Come to Montrйal to share, discover, learn and dialogue together for a better world in the future.
I look forward meeting you in Montrйal.
Marc Ganem, M.D.

World Association for Sexology

WAS History
The XVII World Congress of Sexology in Montreal in 2005 will mark nearly a century in the development of this fundamental area in the study of human behaviour. The first congress of the World Association for Sexology (WAS) was held in Mexico in 1979.The 16th World Congress took place in 2003 in Havana, Cuba.
From its inception to the very vital adoption of a Universal Declaration of Sexual Rights in August of 1999 by the WAS General Assembly, the organization has worked tirelessly throughout the world to end discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation and bring critical perspectives to the myriad issues of gender and sexuality. WAS has been forthright in condemning the genital circumcision of women, sexual torture in prisons and other forms of gender or sexually-biased practices.
To foster trans-cultural exchanges and promote knowledge transfers, WAS has formal ties with prominent regional sexological organizations:
- The Asia-Oceania Federation of Sexology
- The European Federation of Sexology
- The Latin American Federation of Sexology
- The African Federation for Sexual Health and Sexual Rights
- and the newly formed North American Federation of Sexuality Organizations
In addition to these, the WAS has developed strong ties with:
- The World Health Organization
- World Psychiatric Association
WAS is committed to the free exchange of ideas and works to promote regional libraries, assists sexology societies to grow throughout the world and collaborates in promoting HIV-prevention strategies and assisting efforts worldwide.

Goals for the Millenium roundtable sessions
In September 2000 on the occasion of the Millennium, a summit meeting of world leaders, under the auspices of the United Nations, identified a list of goals with a view to combat poverty, hunger, sickness, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women. A programme for worldwide action: these goals are called the Development Goals for the Millennium.
Inspired by this movement, the XVII World Congress of Sexology has elected to be a centre for dialogue and reflection. With a view to help focus Congress participants on common goals in addition to provide a basis for a global plan for developing sexual health, the XVII World Congress of Sexology proposes a process which fits in perfectly with the Development Goals for the Millennium.
The concepts are centred on the following eight objectives:
- Ensure sexual rights for all
- Develop global strategies for sexual health
- Provide access to universal sexuality education
- Promote gender equity in sexuality
- Eradicate sexual abuse and violence
- Recognize sexual pleasure as a component of well-being
- Eradicate STI`s including HIV/AIDS
- Combat sexual disease and dysfunction
The Congress Programme will provide a forum for discussion on each of these goals and insure contribution of Congress participants. These discussions will contribute the essential components to achieve our version of the Millennium development.
